Aspekt jezičke upotrebe u kojem neke lingvističke funkcije mogu biti smatrane manje "osnovnim" ili manje "omiljenim" od drugih. Markiranost je obično uslovljena kontekstom, tj. ima veliki opseg efekata. Primer: leksema "vazda" je markirana pripadnošću razgovornom stilu, dok je "uvek" neutralna leksema sa istim osnovnim značenjem.
