El programa más importante que se ejecuta en una computadora. Cada ordenador de uso general debe tener un sistema operativo para ejecutar otros programas. Los sistemas operativos realizan tareas tan básicas como el reconocimiento de la entrada del teclado, enviar la salida a la pantalla, no perder de vista archivos y directorios en el disco, y controlar los dispositivos periféricos, como discos duros e impresoras. Ejemplos de sistemas operativos incluyen DOS, Windows, Sun / OS, UNIX, Linux, FreeBSD, PalmOS, y MacOS.
